Murchison Falls National Park: Uganda’s Wildest Frontier

Uganda’s largest national park is a place where the Nile River is squeezed through a gorge just 7 meters wide before exploding into the churning waters below — a sight that gives the park its name and its drama. Beyond the falls, Murchison offers some of the country’s most rewarding big-game viewing.

The Falls Themselves

The Nile funnels through a narrow rock gap with tremendous force, dropping 43 meters into the Devil’s Cauldron. You can view it from above via a short hike to the top, or from below by boat, with mist rising off the water and rainbows forming in the afternoon light.

Wildlife on the Northern Bank

Game drives across the park’s savanna reveal large herds of Rothschild’s giraffe, elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, and lions — including occasional sightings of tree-climbing lions in the Buligi region. Leopards and hyenas round out the predator sightings for patient visitors.

The Nile Boat Safari

A launch cruise from Paraa up to the base of the falls is one of the park’s signature experiences. Expect close encounters with hippos, Nile crocodiles, and abundant birdlife — including the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork in the delta area, a major draw for birders worldwide.

Getting There

Murchison Falls National Park is roughly a 4–5 hour drive from Kampala, or a short scenic flight for travelers short on time. Many itineraries combine it with a stop in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route, home to Uganda’s only wild-roaming rhino population.

Best Combined With

Murchison Falls National Park pairs naturally with Kibale Forest for chimpanzee tracking or with a Nile source visit in Jinja for travelers wanting a mix of wildlife and adventure activities like white-water rafting.
